What Bloggers Are Saying About Us

“The idea of a bunch of bloggers getting together just screams geekville. But the more blogs i read, the more I blog and the more fans of blogs i meet, the more a blogging convention seems like an idea whose time has come.”

Last November my boss over at the Trib asked me if I wanted to attend the Blogworld conference in Vegas and bring back a report on new media opportunites. I thought it was a little strange since it had nothing to do with my job (I'm a tech); but I couldn't turn down an all expense paid trip to Vegas. So my natural response was "hell yea".I had never blogged before, but after going to the expo and experiencing the energy and community of the bloggers first hand, I couldn't wait to get home and set up a blog. I came back energized and bursting with ideas to bring back to our web team.

(Poynter Online) A watershed moment for milblogs happened in 2005 when CNN's then-news chief Eason Jordan was reported as saying at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that he knew of 12 journalists who were killed by coalition forces in Iraq. (Jordan later backpedaled from those remarked.)Said Schippert, "Milbloggers banded together over that. The gauntlet was laid down, and we told Jordan to put up or shut up. We asked him to release the tape from this conference and own up to what he said. That got milbloggers a lot of attention, and Jordan left CNN not long afterward.

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about my experience at the BlogWorldExpo political panels, and noted the alarming moral degeneracy among the conservative attendees. I was helped in this by the notes taken by K T Cat. He made my point for me by condensing several examples of this government's behavior (warrantless wiretapping, shredding the Constitution, going to war on lies, etc.) that I find more offensive than words for sex and body parts into the dismissive phrase "Bush administration policies," then promptly declaring that sexual attitudes should be the top priority of society. Right.

I am fascinated by some of the newer media being used as social objects such as podcasts and video. The only thing about audio and video is that it is not directly text searchable.

You ever find you try and fit something into an event space and it just doesn't fit. I mean it feels right and looks good on paper but when you actually get there it is just off.I just sent off a budget to a client and we had a nice number to work with. But things just add up. Some cool stuff though 52 foot screen, pyro, custom song, spider technology for graphics, videos its going to be really fun! But will it all fit?Sadly nothing can be perfect but you try to put the best show on possible for your attendees.

Last week at BlogWorld Expo Patsi and I did video interviews with some of the bloggers we met. I use a Flip Video camera and I have to say, it was a hit with everyone we talked to. Everyone wanted to know how it worked and how much it cost. The original one (at left) that I own is $119 at Amazon.com and the new Flip Ultra is $149 and comes in a variety of colors: black, white, pink and orange.

One of our favorite things about attending and exhibiting at the recent Blogworld & New Media Expo was the chance to meet with the great folks of our new partner, b5media. They have an excellent team of bloggers, editors, managers, sales pros, and IT wizards who are all singularly focused on success. We are excited to be working with them.We didn't take nearly as many pictures of the b5media team as we should have - I guess we were too busy talking, getting to know each other, and strategizing.

Now that I've actually recuperated from my trip to Vegas for the BlogWorld Expo, I'm able to step back and see all the great relationships I formed during those two very short days that I was there. It's one thing to communicate with bloggers via email and through comments on your blog or their blog, but nothing beats actually sitting with a blogger face to face and just sipping cocoa in a cafe (like I did with Liz Strauss) or playing Wii at a trade show booth with people who feel like long-time friends although it's the first time you've met them in person.

Social media sometimes appears to be an inch deep and a mile wide. At least that is the way it looks to some because social media, or new media, is still in its infancy. Or perhaps we had profiles on other sites, but the Rain helped us see the huge potential of sharing with and getting to know others. At BlogWorld Expo last week in Las Vegas, social networking was one of the hottest topics. As blogging continues to gain popularity these online networks are going to explode. Facebook, Gather and LinkedIn were three of the sites that were mentioned the most for business. One thing I realized at the expo is that even with 50,000+ members, ActiveRain is just a drop in the online bucket.

I'm back from the BlogWorld Expo in Las Vegas and it was an extremely successful event on the sports blogging side. We had sessions featuring Rob Neyer of ESPN.com, Will Leitch of Deadspin and a cadre of incredibly talented sports bloggers. And the best part? We had some great interaction with aspiring bloggers, which was really the intention of the event. We need to push sports blogging forward and I think the sessions did just that. Any way, it's officially award season for Major League Baseball and I wanted to do my own little award today.

BlogWorld Expo was a great first blogging and podcasting event. While there were very few podcasters their the interest was still quite high by many bloggers. One of the things that Leo Laporte said during his Friday very early morning keynote was that Bloggers need to be Podcasting and Podcasters need to be Blogging.

I went to the BlogWorldExpo last week, having been invited at nearly the last minute to sit on a couple panels with a grab bag of wingnuttia's most famous and some very cool liberal bloggers. Jeralyn at TalkLeft, my co-panelist on a session about elevating political discourse on the blogs, has the guest list. I think the right blog reaction to me was probably summed up best by Michael Medved's incredulous, "you're a vegetarian, too!?," response when he saw me with an appetizer plate of zucchini and hummus at the opening night party.

So are we Spoiled? Let me set up where I am going here... At this past weekends 1st annual Blogworld Expo in Las Vegas there was a panel on bloggers gaining acceptance. While the question was broken down in a few different catagories the majority of the focus was in regards to the mainstream media. Jamie Mottram from Yahoo, Rob Neyer from ESPN and Chris Ballard from SI.com offered a lot of helpful tips both to all in attendance but privately as well in my conversations with them. I hope to write more on the whole experience later.

I'm at McCarron Airport in Las Vegas, waiting for my flight back to Burbank after attending the BlogWorld Expo. Since I'm not in a rush, I gave up my seat on the overbooked flight I was on in exchange for $100 + the cost of my flight. That will pay for my flight to see my family at Christmas! And it gives me some time to reflect on the last few days. For me, BWE started on the flight to Las Vegas when I was seated next to a fellow who had been hired by Pajamas Media, one of the BWE sponsors, to entertain folks at their booth.

How Conflict in the Workplace Can Affect Customer Relations

My personal life was very eventful last week, so I apologize for the lack of posts. My family and friends tend to think of me as the go-to person whenever they need counseling and unfortunately that took it's toll on me emotionally and physically. However, it made me think that I should get out to BlogWorld Expo after all - just to get back into the groove of things! Things like this often happen within a business setting as well. There is internal conflict that needs to be squashed and often times it affects our interactions with customers.
